Developer Rubeki is expanding its universe of murky megastructures with The Hollowing, a new game that shifts focus from ground-based spelunking to aerial exploration. This follow-up to 2024's Lorn's Lure, a game praised for its challenging climbing and exploration mechanics, will feature a distinctive airplane as the primary mode of transport.
The Hollowing is set in the same narrative universe as Lorn's Lure, but instead of navigating treacherous structures on foot, players will pilot an aircraft between radio outposts. The plane, described as being constructed from "barbed wire and horseshoes," will require refueling and maintenance. Developer Rubeki notes that success will depend on the player's "skill and concentration" as a pilot.
The core gameplay loop involves flying to the next comms tower, landing on an airstrip, performing necessary repairs, and repeating the process. Players are advised to "follow the lights," avoid spore clouds, and not question their handler, with the game hinting at unsettling radio transmissions.
A demo for The Hollowing is available now on Steam. The full game is slated for release later this year. The developer suggests that fans of games like Gormenghast, Blame!, and Yedoma Globula may find The Hollowing appealing, alongside those who enjoyed Lorn's Lure.
