Bruce Straley, a prominent figure from Naughty Dog known for his work on the Jak, Uncharted, and The Last of Us series, has publicly questioned the widespread excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6. Straley, who later co-founded Wildflower Interactive, posed the query on social media out of genuine curiosity, seeking to understand the specific appeals of Rockstar's upcoming open-world game.
Straley expressed his own uncertainty about his interest in playing GTA 6 and invited his followers to share their reasons for anticipation. He specifically asked what new elements players hoped to see, or simply why they intended to play the game, noting, "I don’t know if I’m interested & I’m not sure if I’m an outlier." He recounted his extensive experience in game development, referencing his time at Naughty Dog as having worked in "the sausage factory a long time."
Responses to Straley's post offered various points of interest. One suggestion highlighted the potential for dynamic weather events, leveraging technology similar to that seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. Straley found this prospect exciting, remarking that "Using that crazy [Red Dead Redemption 2] weather tech to create dynamic events sounds sick." Another user proposed a surfing system, which Straley deemed an enjoyable addition. The idea of nonlinear missions with multiple solutions was also met with Straley's agreement.
However, Straley also voiced a critique, suggesting that while Red Dead Redemption 2 was visually impressive, its core systems lacked depth, with gameplay often simplifying to "follow the yellow line." He countered the argument that deeper systems do not appeal to a mass audience, stating, "Having deeper systems would allow for more varieties of players to play in their own style. And it feels like the potential of 'open world' should come with a payoff of 'open approaches' to gameplay." Straley concluded that this lack of 'open approaches' was a reason for his current disinterest.
Straley spent 18 years at Naughty Dog, departing in 2017 to seek "new problems to solve" and "new creative outlets." He described Naughty Dog as the "pinnacle" of game development but chose not to join another AAA studio to avoid navigating "a whole different bureaucratic or cultural system."
Wildflower Interactive, Straley's current studio, is developing a game called Coven of the Chicken Foot. Although Microsoft was initially set to publish the title, they withdrew, and Wildflower has since secured alternative funding. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Further announcements may coincide with parent company Take-Two's earnings report scheduled for August 7.
