Bruce Straley, the acclaimed director behind titles such as The Last of Us and several entries in the Uncharted series, has expressed a lack of enthusiasm for the current state of AAA game development. In a recent interview with Edge magazine, Straley described modern blockbuster games as "boring," citing a perceived absence of risk-taking and innovation within the industry.
Straley highlighted God of War: Laufey as an example of a technically impressive game that, despite its immense effort and skill in execution, failed to excite him. "God of War Laufey, I look at that game, and every pixel is mindblowing," he stated. "The amount of work and skill that’s gone into every single frame… I’ve made those kinds of games, and I’m still blown away. But when I actually look at what you’re doing in the game? I’m not excited. And that’s nothing against the God of War team. Just, across the board in triple-A, it feels like there’s no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas.”
Ironically, Straley's own past work on The Last of Us and Uncharted is often cited as a blueprint for the hyper-cinematic, third-person action games that have become prevalent in the AAA space. The 2018 reboot of God of War, for instance, was humorously noted by some players for its similarities to The Last of Us.
Straley departed from Naughty Dog in 2017, following the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. He is credited with special thanks in The Last of Us Part 2, though his direct involvement after leaving the studio is unclear, as the game underwent significant development over nearly four years without him. Straley cited extensive burnout from the demanding AAA development process as the reason for his departure.
He is now focusing on smaller-scale projects at his own studio, Wildflower Interactive. The studio's first announced game, Coven of the Chicken Foot, was revealed at The Game Awards 2025 and appears to represent a significant departure from his previous work. The game currently has no release date.
