Naughty Dog has offered PlayStation 5 owners a new way to customize their consoles with a free background themed around The Last of Us. This release coincides with the studio's preparations for The Last of Us Day 2026, with further announcements planned for September 28.
The new background is available for the PlayStation 5's Welcome Hub landing page. It features both younger and older iterations of Ellie from the series' mainline games. While not a dynamic theme, it provides a visual update for fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise.
To access the background, PS5 users can navigate to the Welcome Hub, select the "Change Background" option, and choose The Last of Us theme from the Games tab. This initial offering precedes more substantial reveals scheduled for later in the week.
Naughty Dog has indicated that September 28 will bring additional content for The Last of Us Day. These planned reveals include a partnership announcement, a collaboration, digital surprises, and a charity stream on Twitch related to the game's No Return mode. While a new installment like The Last of Us Part 3 has not been confirmed, speculation about the series' future continues, fueled by past comments from creator Neil Druckmann.
In related news, the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us has added new cast members for its third season. John Goodman will portray a new character named Joey. Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in The Last of Us Part 2, will play a Seraphite leader named Elizabeth. Ian Alexander is also joining the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role, having previously appeared as Lev in the second game.
