The Legend of California, the upcoming survival game from Kintsugiyama—the studio founded by former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan and lead software engineer Tim Ford—has been delayed. The game's early access release on PC, previously targeted for 2026, is now scheduled for 2027.
Reason for the Delay
In a recent Reddit AMA, Kaplan and Ford addressed the shift in the release window. The primary reason for the delay stems from ongoing issues with server performance. "We have server performance metrics we're trying to hit before release," Kaplan stated, adding that the Alpha 3 build of the game had "performance issues and didn't feel up to our standards for release." While the development team feels confident about the game's content and features, they require additional time to optimize the technical aspects.
The Legend of California is envisioned as a multiplayer-driven survival experience set in a fictionalized Gold Rush-era California. Players will be able to build ranches, mine resources, and explore the environment. The studio aims to implement features such as private servers, modding support, a robust mine collapse and support system, and pets.
Release Platforms and Future Plans
Kintsugiyama confirmed that The Legend of California will launch into early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2027. The studio is also in discussions with Nvidia regarding a potential GeForce Now release. However, the game will not be available on consoles during its early access period.
Fans looking to get an early look at the game will have an opportunity during a scheduled alpha test on Steam from November 12 to November 18. The delay to 2027 was previously mentioned in a reply on X by the game's official account, but this Reddit AMA provided the most comprehensive update on the situation.
