Nintendo has officially announced that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5. The details were revealed during a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation, which also showcased the first gameplay trailer for the updated classic.
During the presentation, series producer Eiji Aonuma offered a glimpse of Link navigating familiar environments like Kokiri Forest and interacting with characters such as Saria. Aonuma described the graphical redesign as aiming to evoke nostalgia while blending photorealism with stylized, highly detailed graphics. The remake will feature manual jumping for Link, a dash move for faster traversal across Hyrule Field, and detailed areas like Hyrule Castle Town.
New gameplay mechanics were also highlighted, including the addition of a dash move to expedite travel through Hyrule's vast landscapes. Players will encounter features like the Great Deku Tree, engage in combat, and discover early-game items such as the slingshot. The game will also introduce a system called "Threads of Time," which visually represents story progress as an in-game tapestry. Additionally, players can expect new methods for playing the ocarina, utilizing audio detection.
Originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a landmark title that transitioned the series from 2D to full 3D environments. It introduced foundational gameplay elements for 3D adventure games, including the Z-targeting system and context-sensitive buttons. This remake follows previous re-releases and remakes of Zelda titles, such as the GameCube version of Ocarina of Time, the Nintendo 3DS remake, and the 2019 graphical overhaul of Link's Awakening for the Switch.
