The upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch will feature a significant change to its world design: time will now pass dynamically within Hyrule Castle Town. Series creator Eiji Aonuma highlighted this alteration during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, showing the sun setting over the town. In the original 1998 Nintendo 64 release, time would halt while Link was within the town confines, with the drawbridge closing at night to prevent entry. This meant players never had the opportunity to explore the town after dark.

The implementation of a day-night cycle suggests that non-player characters may alter their routines, with many likely to be asleep during nighttime hours. This change also opens the door for new side quests or expanded content that specifically leverages the ability to explore the town under the cover of night. The remake will also introduce a dedicated jump button for Link, a departure from the original game's auto-jump mechanic which triggered when Link reached the edge of platforms. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is scheduled for release on November 5, coinciding with the launch of a new Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 console and Pro Controller.
