The Lord of the Rings Online Launches New Expansion, 'The Wolves of Mordor'

The Lord of the Rings Online, a long-running MMO set in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world, has released its newest expansion, titled "The Wolves of Mordor." This release comes approximately 19.5 years after the game's original launch in 2007.

As the name suggests, "The Wolves of Mordor" expansion centers on the werewolves of Mordor and their pursuit of those who opposed Sauron. Players will venture beyond the region of Gorgoroth into three new areas: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol. Within these zones, players can acquire new skills and enhancements, which can be combined to create unique playstyles.

The expansion also introduces a new companion system called Neighbors. These companions feature distinct personality traits and a dynamic mood system, allowing players to forge friendships, receive stories and gifts, and undertake missions with them.

"The Wolves of Mordor" is available in three editions: a standard edition for $40, a Collector's Edition for $80 with additional cosmetic items, and an Ultimate Fan Bundle for $130, which includes further cosmetics, extra neighbor characters, and XP boosts.

Since its debut in 2007, The Lord of the Rings Online, originally developed by Turbine, has seen numerous expansions. The game transitioned from a subscription-based model to free-to-play in 2010. Development is currently handled by Standing Stone Games, with Daybreak Game Company serving as publisher.

The Lord of the Rings Online remains active among the ranks of enduring MMOs, with titles like Blizzard's World of Warcraft (launched 2004) and Ultima Online (launched 1997) also continuing to operate. The broader Lord of the Rings media landscape is also seeing continued activity, with Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" returning for its third season in November and an upcoming film, "The Hunt for Gollum," directed by and starring Andy Serkis, slated for 2027. Additionally, new Lord of the Rings games are in development, including a project from Kingdom Come studio Warhorse.
