The Marvel Cinematic Universe's earliest villain, Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, has made a surprising return in the latest episode of the Disney+ series 'VisionQuest.' Raza, who first appeared in 2008's Iron Man, is technically the first antagonist Tony Stark faced as Iron Man, predating Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger.
Raza led the Afghan division of the Ten Rings, a terrorist organization, and was responsible for capturing Tony Stark in the opening of Iron Man. In an Afghan cave, Stark was forced to build a missile but instead created his first Iron Man suit, the Mark 1, with the help of Ho Yinsen. Stark's escape resulted in casualties among the Ten Rings, and Raza survived with severe facial burns.
Later in Iron Man, it was revealed that Obadiah Stane hired Raza to kill Stark, with the intention of Stark building a missile before his demise. Stane later confronted Raza, incapacitating him and ordering his men to retrieve the Mark 1 armor and eliminate the remaining Ten Rings members. It was widely assumed Raza died in this encounter.
However, 'VisionQuest' episode 6 revealed Raza is alive and operating as a bounty hunter. He confronts Paladin, another bounty hunter pursuing Vision, in Madripoor. Raza, now seemingly separated from the Ten Rings due to his past failures or rogue actions, claims he has adamantium bullets capable of harming Vision. Paladin recognizes Raza, referencing his past with Stark and the Ten Rings.
While Raza's reappearance is brief and his escape from the firing squad in Iron Man remains unexplained, his presence in 'VisionQuest' ties back to the MCU's origins. The character, played by Faran Tahir, was quickly defeated by Paladin in a sword fight, but his survival suggests potential for future appearances, hopefully sooner than the two decades that passed since his debut.
