Universal Pictures has revealed the official title for the next installment in The Mummy franchise, now known as The Mummy: Book of the Dead. The film is slated for theatrical release on October 15, 2027, exactly one year from the announcement.
This upcoming movie will see the return of Rachel Weisz as Evie Carnahan and Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell. Weisz, who opted out of the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, is set to reprise her role, with Maria Bello having taken over the part in the previous entry. Recent set photos have suggested that Book of the Dead may be set in the late 1950s, showcasing new looks for both Weisz and Fraser.
Potential Storylines and Returning Characters
The title The Mummy: Book of the Dead strongly implies a return to the original narrative focus on the titular mummy Imhotep, whose resurrection in the first two films was facilitated by the Book of the Dead. The involvement of Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, the leader of the Medjai warriors tasked with keeping Imhotep imprisoned, further suggests that Imhotep may play a significant role, potentially being resurrected once again.
Adding to the speculation, John Hannah, who plays Jonathan Carnahan, has indicated that Arnold Vosloo, the original actor for Imhotep, is expected to return. Additionally, Kevin J. O'Connor is reprising his role as Beni, a character who seemingly perished in the first film. This suggests Beni may not have died and could be involved in Imhotep's potential return.
Further plot details for The Mummy: Book of the Dead have yet to be officially released, but more information is expected as the release date approaches and promotional materials are unveiled.
