The Must-Play Board Games from 2026's Biggest Board Game Fair

SPIEL Essen, the world’s largest board game fair, drew 230,000 attendees in 2026, showcasing 2,012 new games from 997 exhibitors. The event saw enthusiastic crowds vying for early access to highly anticipated titles, demos of upcoming releases, and exclusive promotional items.

Among the many offerings, several titles stood out for their innovative gameplay, strong themes, and potential for broad appeal.

Mercenaries Wanted

Designed by Dennis Vögele, Mercenaries Wanted offers a condensed experience reminiscent of the lengthy setup and play of Gloomhaven. This game, playable by one to six players, involves drafting characters from Gloomhaven's mercenary packs to undertake jobs. Success hinges on creating synergies between card types and abilities, with strategic decisions regarding which characters to retain between rounds for a final tournament. Secret loot adds another layer of tactical depth, allowing players to secure the best jobs ahead of opponents. The game is expected to be released in December 2026.

Tideward

Connie Vogelmann, designer of Apiary and Wyrmspan, presents Tideward, a board game focused on guiding sea turtle hatchlings to safety. Each player pursues a hidden scoring objective while competing for prime positions on a communal algal mat. The game emphasizes strategic use of free movement, available at the end of each round and through specific turtle placements on a tide-themed rondel. Players must also contend with predators, though the game is designed to be forgiving, offering ample chances to evade threats. Tideward is scheduled for release on January 16, 2027.

Diablo: Unbound

Developed by Glass Cannon Unplugged, Diablo: Unbound is a cooperative board game that synthesizes the most compelling elements from the Diablo franchise. Players select from distinct classes, such as the Rogue or Paladin, each with unique strategies, equipment, and skill trees. The objective involves completing missions, acquiring loot, and defeating respawning monsters, all while managing the risk of party wipe due to brutal attacks. Even in defeat, players gain benefits to aid in subsequent attempts. The game's crowdfunding campaign is set to begin in the first quarter of 2027 on Gamefound.

This installment introduces water-focused mechanics and new species, offering fresh strategic synergies compared to earlier Forest Shuffle titles. The game emphasizes efficient card play to maximize points before winter arrives. It is set for release on October 30.

Cyberpunk Trading Card Game

The Cyberpunk Trading Card Game, designed by Luohan Wei and Elliot Cook, generated significant buzz at SPIEL Essen, evidenced by its long queues. Players compete for status in Night City by acquiring gig dice of varying values. The game offers strategic depth through decisions on whether to play cards for their effects or use them as resources, and how to deploy Legend cards that can transition from face-down resources to powerful attackers. A hard turn limit ensures games are relatively quick, allowing for rapid replays. Print-and-play demo decks are available, and the game releases on November 6.

Timespan

Timespan, designed by Kenneth Minde and Kristian Amundsen Østby, provides a streamlined and rapid civilization-building experience, contrasting with lengthier games like Through the Ages. This game progresses players from the Stone Age to the Space Age in approximately 90 minutes. Gameplay involves simultaneous worker placement and engine building through technology upgrades and recruiting historical figures. Asymmetric civilizations and a diverse card pool encourage varied strategies for resource gathering and cultural advancement. The game is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
