The Pokémon Company is implementing strict measures for obtaining a special illustration card featuring Mega Gallade, drawn by artist Akira Egawa, which is slated to be one of the year's most sought-after Pokémon cards. This promotional card, part of the Japanese TCG set Storm Emeralda, will be printed in limited quantities, making it exceptionally difficult for fans to acquire.
To obtain the Mega Gallade card, players have two primary avenues. The first involves participating in a themed tournament where decks must predominantly feature cards from the Storm Emeralda set. Players who achieve at least three victories in these tournaments will be mailed the card starting in December 2026. This route favors skilled Pokémon TCG players.
The second method allows participants to submit an account detailing their experience playing the Storm Emeralda set with friends and family at home. While not requiring TCG proficiency, this approach necessitates thoughtful engagement with the card game. From these submissions, 2,000 individuals will be randomly selected to receive the card.
Both methods of application are contingent upon identity verification using Japan's My Number Card, a form of national identification. The Pokémon Company previously announced a similar requirement for purchases at official Pokémon Center stores, citing a commitment to providing equal opportunities and ensuring a safe environment for all customers. This expansion of the ID requirement to other official events underscores the company's strategy to reward genuine fans and deter scalpers and bots.
The rarity and artistic merit of the Mega Gallade card mean that even those who manage to obtain it may choose to resell it. Cards associated with specific events can fetch high prices, sometimes thousands of dollars, on the secondary market, although their limited supply exacerbates demand.
Despite the stringent requirements, fans outside of Japan have expressed a desire for similar programs to be implemented globally, highlighting the current challenges in acquiring Pokémon cards.
