Simpsons creator Matt Groening has seemingly hinted at a potential return for the beloved 2003 action-adventure game, The Simpsons: Hit & Run. During a panel at Disney's D23 event, Groening responded to a question about a possible sequel by stating, "I don't know [if] I'm speaking out of turn, I think the original game is coming back in some form." The comment was immediately followed by current showrunner Matt Selman interjecting with, "...or not," an apparent attempt to walk back Groening's remarks.
This statement marks the most direct acknowledgment of a potential Hit & Run revival in years. Fans have long hoped for a re-release or sequel, and the timing aligns with the rebranding of Radical Entertainment, the original developer, to New Radical Games. This new entity specializes in remastering classic titles and prominently features Hit & Run on its website.
A sequel to Hit & Run was previously in development. Producer John Melchior revealed in a 2023 interview that Radical had begun work on Hit & Run 2, alongside a medieval-themed Simpsons game conceived by Groening himself. However, original publisher Vivendi reportedly declined a deal for five additional Simpsons games, halting those projects without a clear explanation.
Earlier this year, The Simpsons showrunner and Hit & Run writer Matt Selman also alluded to the possibility of a remake or revival, stating that one should "never say never." Celebrating the show's 800th episode, Selman acknowledged the game's cult status and stated that "nothing is set in stone," recognizing the widespread fondness for the title among fans. He reflected on his involvement in writing the game in his mid-to-late twenties, expressing surprise at its enduring popularity and cult success among the many Simpsons games released over the years.
