A 40th anniversary 4K steelbook edition of the beloved 1986 animated film, The Transformers: The Movie, is slated for release on November 17. The limited-edition set will be available in 4K UHD and Blu-ray formats, with preorders open at major retailers. A standard DVD edition will also launch on the same date.
In addition to the home media release, the film is scheduled for a limited theatrical re-release from September 17 to 21. This cinematic revival coincides with the movie's significant milestone.
The Transformers: The Movie, set in the year 2005, introduces the planet-devouring Unicron as a new threat to Cybertron and the Autobots. The film boasts a remarkable voice cast, including the late Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Orson Welles in one of his final roles as Unicron, alongside Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, and Frank Welker. The soundtrack features "Dare to be Stupid" by 'Weird Al' Yankovic.
The movie's narrative bridges the gap between the second and third seasons of the original animated TV series, which ran from 1984 to 1987. The series itself is available on DVD and for streaming on platforms like Tubi and Pluto.
This is not the first anniversary edition for The Transformers: The Movie, as it has received periodic re-releases every five years. However, the 40th anniversary marks a notable occasion for fans looking to acquire the film in a premium format.
