The Witcher 3 Achieves Record Player Count Following Remaster Release

More than a decade after its initial launch, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has experienced a remarkable resurgence, achieving record-breaking player numbers on Steam. The game's concurrent player count recently peaked at 120,975, surpassing the previous record of 103,329 set in January 2020. That earlier milestone was boosted by the release of the Netflix series, but the current numbers represent a significant increase.

This surge in players coincides with the release of The Witcher 3 Remastered, a substantial update that brings numerous technical and graphical enhancements to the 2015 title. The remastered edition is available as a free upgrade for existing owners, which likely contributed to the influx of players returning to experience the updated version. The game's total lifetime sales have reached 65 million units globally as of May 2026, and frequent discounts mean many players already own a copy.

The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the crowded gaming calendar. The Witcher 3 Remastered launched amidst a period of significant releases, including titles like Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Control Resonant, Marvel's Wolverine, and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, as well as the consistently dominant live-service games. This busy release schedule typically sees many games vying for attention, making The Witcher 3's success even more impressive.

Beyond PC storefronts like Steam and GOG, The Witcher 3 is also available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S. While Steam figures represent a substantial portion of the PC player base, the total number of concurrent players across all platforms is expected to be considerably higher.

Looking ahead, CD Projekt Red has further content planned for The Witcher universe. An expansion titled "Songs of the Past" is slated for release in 2027, with The Witcher 4 potentially arriving as early as 2028. Rumors also suggest a multiplayer Witcher game is in development, alongside a new mobile title based on one of CD Projekt Red's franchises, potentially including The Witcher or Cyberpunk, in collaboration with Scopely.
