The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to receive a free remastered update next month, and CD Projekt Red is once again tapping into the talented modding community. HalkHogan, the creator of the popular The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project mod, has confirmed that their work will be officially integrated into the game when the update launches on September 29th for PC and consoles. This marks a continuation of CD Projekt Red's approach from the game's 2022 next-gen update, where they also collaborated with modders.
HalkHogan stated in a post that their contribution to the remaster involves reworking almost all in-game characters, monsters, animals, vegetation, armors and equipment for Geralt and Roach, as well as a significant portion of the environment, with a focus on achieving the highest quality. The integration means that players will no longer need to manually install the HD Reworked Project mod to experience these visual enhancements.
This collaboration offers significant benefits, particularly for console players who historically have had limited access to such extensive visual upgrades unless officially implemented. For PC players, it streamlines the process of enjoying a visually improved experience without the need for third-party modifications.
CD Projekt Red has a precedent for recognizing and compensating modders whose work is incorporated into official releases. Following the 2022 next-gen update, the studio reportedly reimbursed modders whose contributions were featured and added them to the game's credits. It is presumed that a similar arrangement will be in place for HalkHogan's involvement in the upcoming remaster.
As with any major game update, particularly those that alter core game files, there is a potential for existing mods to experience compatibility issues. Mods that rely on scripting or modifications to specific game elements may require their own updates to function correctly with the remastered version of The Witcher 3. Historically, however, mod creators have been diligent in updating their work to maintain compatibility with new game patches and versions.
