CD Projekt Red has unveiled a new gameplay trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming DLC, "Songs of the Past," during Gamescom's Opening Night Live. This new content marks the conclusion of the acclaimed RPG's 11-year journey, focusing on Geralt's final adventure before passing the mantle to Ciri.

The trailer showcased mythical creatures Geralt will face and introduced new weaponry, including a hookshot-like tool reminiscent of the original game. To prepare players for this final addition, CD Projekt Red announced that both of the game's major DLCs will be made available to play for free. While a specific release date for "Songs of the Past" remains unannounced, it is described as being comparable in scope to the "Blood and Wine" expansion, which itself requires dozens of hours to complete.

Set in an entirely new region, the DLC will feature fresh quests and monsters, with Geralt uncovering a hidden, dark secret. "Songs of the Past" is positioned as Geralt's farewell, aiming to ensure his departure is impactful. Despite CD Projekt Red's ongoing work on The Witcher 4, this DLC is not intended as a prelude to the next main installment in the series.

Originally launched in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 65 million copies and significantly influenced the RPG genre with its expansive world and compelling protagonist. Over its lifespan, the game has received 16 pieces of DLC and two major expansions, most recently "Blood and Wine" in 2016. The game has also seen subsequent releases with next-gen upgrades across various platforms.

Looking ahead, CD Projekt Red is committed to expanding the Witcher universe. The studio aims to release an entire Witcher trilogy within a six-year timeframe, with the Ciri-led sequel, developed in Unreal Engine 5, expected to be their largest game to date. This renewed focus on the franchise comes as the studio has undergone considerable transformation since The Witcher 3's initial release.
