CD Projekt Red has announced that the first look at The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt's "Songs of the Past" expansion will be showcased during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 23. The developer confirmed the upcoming expansion shortly after the initial announcement of its development.
Beyond the initial reveal at the Gamescom kick-off event, "Songs of the Past" will also be playable on the showfloor via guided presentations at CD Projekt Red's booth throughout the convention. This expansion arrives 12 years after The Witcher 3's original release and will follow Geralt of Rivia on a new quest, though specific details remain scarce. The expansion is being co-developed with Fool's Theory, a studio composed of veteran developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3.
"Songs of the Past" is slated for release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A notable decision by CD Projekt Red is the discontinuation of Windows 10 support for the expansion. While the studio stated this does not preclude the game from running on older operating systems, they will not offer support or conduct testing on Windows 10 moving forward. This move may impact players who prefer Windows 10 for its perceived gaming performance benefits.
The Witcher franchise is experiencing a period of increased development activity. Fool's Theory is also engaged in a remake of the original Witcher game, while CD Projekt Red has significantly expanded its focus on The Witcher 4, with more than half of its studio dedicated to its development.
