CD Projekt Red has provided an extended look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming expansion, titled "Songs of the Past," during Gamescom. The hour-long gameplay demo showcased Geralt exploring a new region called Letten, facing off against previously unseen foes, and utilizing a novel chain weapon.
The expansion continues the established formula of The Witcher 3, promising a vast new area to explore, numerous quests, and a narrative that weaves together familiar characters with new ones. The demo focused on Geralt's quest to recover Dandelion's lute, a journey that quickly escalates as he uncovers a deeper mystery surrounding the bard's past. Geralt's investigation leads him to Dandelion's childhood home and introduces his cousin, Lilla.
Geralt and Lilla venture into the "garden of thorns," an area characterized by its labyrinthine and somewhat unnatural design. Here, they encounter two new enemy types: the Thornbloom, a plant-based adversary that fires acid projectiles from a distance, and the Swarmion, a ghoul-like creature protected by a swarm of hornets. To combat these threats, Geralt employs a new chain weapon. This implement allows him to pull enemies closer, disrupting their defenses and enabling new finishing moves, including a brutal head-severing execution.
The demo also featured a boss encounter with an undead knight, interspersed with exploration sequences. The presentation suggests that Lilla may be a potential new romance option for Geralt.
"Songs of the Past" is slated for release in 2027 and is currently available to wishlist. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt itself continues to maintain a significant player base, particularly on PC, according to SteamDB.
