CD Projekt has announced that the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled "Songs of the Past," will receive its official reveal at Gamescom 2026 during the Opening Night Live event. The expansion is slated for a 2027 release, marking a significant continuation for the fantasy RPG.
"Songs of the Past" is the third major expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, arriving 12 years after the original game's launch and 11 years after the widely praised "Blood and Wine" expansion. CD Projekt is co-developing this new content with Fool's Theory, a studio composed of industry veterans who previously contributed to The Witcher 3.
The expansion will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia for a new adventure, launching in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. CD Projekt has indicated that "Songs of the Past" will serve as a bridge to the forthcoming The Witcher 4. While it will tell an independent story set after the events of The Witcher 3, the expansion is also intended to act as a prologue of sorts to the next main installment in the series.
CD Projekt's joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, discussed the expansion's positioning, explaining that the decision to delay its release to 2027 was made to ensure the highest quality experience for players. He noted that the core objective is to deliver a fun and high-quality experience for existing fans, with any connection to future titles being a beneficial side effect.
Further details emerged during a fan livestream, where hints were given about the expansion's focus. Artwork revealed for a springtime festival, Belleteyn Night, showcased Geralt with a new, distinct sword. This sword, featuring an ornate, curved crossguard, is also visible in the official artwork for "Songs of the Past." Senior community and social media manager Laura Beitzel teased that this sword is important to the story and will be explained upon the expansion's release. The expansion will also feature Geralt's bard companion, Dandelion.
Regarding the scope of the content, Beitzel confirmed that "Songs of the Past" will be comparable in size and quality to "Blood and Wine." The expansion will also include additional Gwent cards. CD Projekt also confirmed ongoing work on cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3, though a release window for this feature has not yet been provided.
CD Projekt is also actively developing The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, indicating a busy period for the studio. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has achieved significant commercial success, recently surpassing 65 million copies sold.
