CD Projekt Red has officially revealed "Songs of the Past," a new expansion for its 2015 title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, during gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. The announcement included a reveal trailer and details about the expansion's setting, narrative, and gameplay additions.
A Glimpse of Letten and a Familiar Weapon
The "Songs of the Past" trailer offers a first look at the expansion's primary setting, the realm of Letten. This new region is described as an idyllic land steeped in rural tradition and folklore, yet harboring a dark secret beneath its surface. Geralt of Rivia will confront new humans and monsters as he endeavors to uncover and overcome this long-dormant evil. A particularly striking moment in the trailer showcases Geralt wielding a chain as a weapon, used to grapple and decapitate an enemy. This weapon is a callback to an item featured in the introduction of the original Witcher 1 game.
Development and Geralt's Final Adventure
Level design lead Miles Tost explained that the concept for "Songs of the Past" had been in development for some time, but scheduling conflicts within CD Projekt Red delayed its progress. The expansion is being developed in collaboration with Fool's Theory, a studio that has employed many veteran developers from the original Witcher 3 team. Tost stated that this expansion will serve as Geralt's final adventure before the protagonist role is passed to Ciri in a future installment, The Witcher 4, planned for 2028. The addition of the chain weapon is intended to make Geralt's journey in this expansion particularly memorable.
Expanding the Witcher 3 Experience
Letten is presented as a unique region with its own distinct identity, offering quests, new monsters, and exploration opportunities that are hallmarks of the Witcher series. Tost emphasized that the expansion will enrich the existing game with new content for fans to discover. In addition to the new story and region, the expansion is also confirmed to include more Gwent content for players.
"Songs of the Past" is slated for release in 2027 for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The expansion can be wishlisted ahead of its launch. The announcement follows news of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, which was also revealed during gamescom ONL 2026.
