CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window, with a new saga in the series set to feature Ciri as the protagonist. The announcement was made via a video message from Joint Chief Executive Officer, Michał Nowakowski.
Nowakowski revealed that more than 500 developers are currently working on The Witcher 4, which he described as the studio's biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date. The title promises a large and immersive open world, intense action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story.
While The Witcher 4 will not be showcased at Gamescom 2026, CD Projekt Red did offer details on the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past. This expansion is slated for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Developed in collaboration with Fool's Theory, a studio composed of industry veterans who worked on The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia.
Songs of the Past is positioned as a standalone story that takes place after the events of The Witcher 3, but it will also serve as a prologue of sorts for The Witcher 4, helping to set the stage for the new saga. CD Projekt Red indicated that the expansion aims to deliver a high-quality experience to existing fans and maintain engagement with the franchise. The decision to move the release to 2027 was made to ensure the best possible outcome for consumers.
Further details about Songs of the Past were teased during a fan livestream. The expansion will feature Geralt with a new, important sword, glimpsed in recent artwork, and his bard companion Dandelion will also be present. The setting includes a significant evening in Witcher lore known as Belleteyn Night. The expansion is expected to be comparable in scope to Blood and Wine, the previous major expansion for The Witcher 3. It will also include additional Gwent cards.
CD Projekt Red is also continuing work on cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3, though a release window for this feature has not yet been specified. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 65 million copies.
If CD Projekt Red adheres to its projected release schedule, with The Witcher 4 in 2028, the studio could potentially release The Witcher 5 in 2031 and The Witcher 6 in 2034, continuing its new trilogy.
