CD Projekt Red is targeting a 2028 release for the upcoming RPG sequel, The Witcher 4, according to a recent update from the developer. Joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski stated that the game is currently the studio's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date." He acknowledged that 2028 is "a bit of a wait" but urged players to "let the team cook," suggesting the final product will be worth it.

The Witcher 4 is being developed by a team of over 500 individuals, who are reportedly "hard at work on a brand new saga." Nowakowski reiterated that the game will feature a vast, immersive open world, intense action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story.

This announcement comes as CD Projekt Red is also preparing to showcase new content for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, specifically its upcoming DLC, "Songs of the Past." This expansion is said to feature a dark story and introduce a new continent. Gamescom will mark the first public showing of this DLC, and more details are expected later in the summer. The expansion is being developed by a team comparable in size to that which created The Witcher 3.

While Ciri is expected to lead The Witcher 4, the protagonist for the "Songs of the Past" DLC will be Geralt. The timeline for this expansion remains unclear, with possibilities including events taking place after The Witcher 3 or even before its main narrative, potentially exploring flashbacks as suggested by the title.

CD Projekt Red also teased "one or two surprises" planned for the show, though these remain undisclosed. It is also worth noting that the joint-CEO mentioned that the release date is a target and could potentially shift.
