CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the upcoming The Witcher 4 will feature a physical collector's edition, complete with a "box" and "feelies," regardless of the industry's move away from game discs. This commitment aims to cater to collectors who value tangible items, even as platforms like PlayStation prepare to end disc production.
Studio joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski stated in an interview that while CD Projekt Red has no control over Sony's decision to halt physical PlayStation disc production by January 2028, the studio intends to ensure its releases remain special for collectors. "We’re big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things," Nowakowski said. "We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. We always supported that. So, whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box. We’re going to have a box that’s going to have some feelies in it. Something you’re going to be wanting to open up and enjoy."
This approach acknowledges the potential absence of a disc in future physical editions. Sony's announcement regarding the end of physical disc production by 2028 represents a significant shift for collectors who have amassed disc-based game libraries over decades. Titles expected to launch around or after this date, like The Witcher 4, might have otherwise foregone physical support entirely.
Historically, CD Projekt Red has included substantial bonuses with its physical releases. Both The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 standard editions came with items such as stickers, a map, developer letters, and postcards. The studio's intention is to continue offering this level of collectible value through its physical packaging, even without a disc.
The Witcher 4 currently has no announced release date. CD Projekt Red is also working on an official remaster of The Witcher 3 and the "Songs of the Past" expansion for the 2015 title.
