Netflix's live-action adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher series has been quietly delayed, with its fifth and final season now expected in 2027. The season was previously anticipated to premiere in 2026, aligning with information from Netflix's marketing and the show's production schedule, according to a report from What's On Netflix.
Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back-to-back, with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich stating last year that they were conceived as a single, cohesive narrative. "We knew we had to break it up in terms of how it would be launched on Netflix, but truly it’s the story of this family journey back together," Hissrich explained, noting the need to adapt a "diverse sort of swath" of the books into 16 episodes.
Season 4 marked a challenging point for the series, receiving some of its lowest critical reviews. The recasting of protagonist Geralt of Rivia, with Liam Hemsworth taking over from Henry Cavill, also drew viewer attention. Cavill originally portrayed Geralt of Rivia when The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019. Anya Chalotra stars as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, Eamon Farren as Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, and Joey Batey as Jaskier.
Henry Cavill has since moved on to a project adapting the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Prime Video. Meanwhile, fans of The Witcher universe can look forward to CD Projekt Red's upcoming The Witcher 4, which will feature Ciri as the main protagonist and is planned to be the first in a new trilogy of games. The award-winning role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also recently received a remastered version.
