The X-Files Reboot Gets Series Order from Hulu

Hulu has officially given a series order to Ryan Coogler's reboot of the classic sci-fi series, The X-Files. The new show is a collaborative effort between Disney's Onyx Collective, 20th Century Television, and Coogler's Proximity Media.

Coogler penned and directed the pilot episode and will serve as an executive producer. Jennifer Yale is on board as showrunner and will also executive produce, alongside Proximity Media's Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, and the original series creator Chris Carter. The series is described as a reboot or reimagining of the original show, and will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as new FBI agents investigating unusual cases. The cast also features Steve Buscemi, Amy Madigan, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton.

Details regarding whether the new series acts as a sequel or a complete reboot, and if original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles, remain unclear. Both actors have expressed interest in returning, and Duchovny has confirmed discussions with Coogler.

"I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler stated. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I couldn’t have asked for better collaborators than my crew, colleagues at Proximity Media and our partners at Onyx Collective and 20th Television. I’m grateful for the trust and support they’ve given us as we take on this new chapter.”

While no release date has been announced, the pilot was filmed earlier this year. A late 2027 release is considered a possibility. In other franchise news, creator Chris Carter has expressed a desire to continue the original series' storyline, which concluded with its eleventh season in 2018. Hulu recently released Carter's director's cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The X-Files franchise is also set to return to comics with a new series from Dynamite Entertainment.
