The Steam Next Fest presents a unique challenge for fans of cozy games: a deluge of demos to sift through. This year, the task was made even more complex by the prevalence of AI-generated content, which had to be navigated to find genuine experiences. After examining hundreds of cozy game store pages and downloading 20 demos, five titles have emerged as strong contenders for a place on my personal wishlist.
Fields of Aaru
Despite initial reservations about its visual style, the ancient Egyptian afterlife farming simulator 'Fields of Aaru' proved surprisingly charming. The demo featured soft, cohesive environmental lighting and low framerate animations that contributed to a unique aesthetic. The characters exuded personality from the outset, and the mechanic of managing hydration to explore the desert added an interesting layer to gameplay. Similar to 'Roots of Pacha,' 'Fields of Aaru' opts for an abstract currency of 'memories' and daily objectives over traditional economic systems.
Beastfolk Barber
'Beastfolk Barber' offers a premise akin to 'Coffee Talk,' but with a focus on hairstyling. While primarily a visual novel with interspersed hair-styling minigames, its narrative delves into the complexities of a world where humans coexist with fantasy creatures. The demo's writing was particularly insightful, exploring the relatable interpersonal challenges that arise in such a setting. The game centers on building a clientele to fulfill a bargain with a demon.
Apple Crumble
For those seeking a blend of cozy and horror, 'Apple Crumble' presents a compelling option. This short thriller revolves around a dramatic family gathering where a sinister plot unfolds against the backdrop of a grandmother's 84th birthday. Described as being similar to 'Knives Out' with a different central character dynamic, the full game is expected to be approximately 60-90 minutes long, offering a concise horror experience.
These three titles, alongside two other farm-related demos, have captured my attention and are now on my wishlist following Steam Next Fest. The event, despite its sheer volume and the presence of AI-generated content, still manages to surface promising new experiences for players looking for their next cozy adventure.
