GOG has released an updated version of Thief Gold as part of its ongoing preservation program. This new iteration of the 1998 stealth classic includes several improvements designed to enhance its compatibility and playability on modern hardware.
The enhancements, chosen by GOG's backers, feature updated graphics and audio, a properly scaled interface, and further control optimizations. The release also incorporates German, French, and Polish localizations, along with an update to the NewDark 1.27 engine, which provides significant compatibility improvements for contemporary PCs.
A notable addition is full support for modern controllers. This functionality has been integrated through Peter Wright's Thief Gamepad Mod, alongside GOG's own Input Wrapper. GOG technical producer Adam Ziółkowski stated that the goal was to honor the extensive work the community has contributed over the years.
For players who prefer the original experience, the launcher now includes an option to launch the pre-Gold version of the game with a single click. This release precedes a full remaster of Thief: The Dark Project that was announced by Nightdive last month.
Thief Gold is currently available at a promotional price of £1.49, with the price set to return to £5.99 after the deal concludes.
