'This Needs to Change': PlayStation Fan Recounts PSN Account Hack

A prominent figure in the PlayStation community, known online as RealRadec, has spoken out about the ongoing security issues affecting PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts after his own account was hacked and stolen. The incident saw hackers change his login credentials, effectively locking him out.

RealRadec noted that the PlayStation support phone line was unavailable during his attempt to regain access, leaving him without immediate assistance. This situation drew parallels to a similar incident earlier this summer involving podcaster Colin Moriarty, who also had his PSN account compromised.

Due to Moriarty's connections within Sony, he was able to secure his account's recovery. Moriarty subsequently assisted RealRadec, who is a collaborator on Moriarty's podcasting network, Last Stand Media. This assistance proved crucial in Radec regaining access to his account.

Following the recovery, RealRadec acknowledged that his position and influence likely expedited the resolution. He stated that many individuals without such reach would not be as fortunate. "This is a problem that has been brewing for a long time now at PlayStation," RealRadec said. "No one deserves to have their account stolen from them and lose access to all of their games, DLC, save data, trophies, etc. It's not right. This needs to change."

Over recent years, numerous PlayStation users have reported being victims of account theft, with compromised accounts reportedly being resold online for significant sums. These stolen accounts grant buyers access to digital games, progress, and other data.

Previously, it was reported that hackers could gain access to accounts by providing basic personal information, such as transaction dates, names, birthdays, and email addresses, to PlayStation support. This method has been described as a way to bypass security measures like two-factor authentication. IGN has reached out to Sony for comment on its efforts to address these security concerns.

The ongoing security issues raise concerns, particularly as PlayStation moves towards an all-digital future. With Sony confirming the discontinuation of physical game production starting in 2028, future consoles like the PS6 are expected to be entirely digital. Without the fallback of physical game ownership, robust account security will become increasingly vital for players.
