Tifa Lockhart, a beloved character from Final Fantasy VII, is set to join the roster of Street Fighter 6 as part of its Year 4 downloadable content. The announcement was made during Summer Game Fest 2026, marking a significant crossover for the fighting game franchise.
Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama explained that Tifa was a natural fit for the game due to her martial arts background, despite her origins in the RPG genre. "She does utilize martial arts in her moves and skillset, so we always felt that she would be a good fit into a game like Street Fighter 6," Nakayama stated. The collaboration began through informal conversations between developers at Capcom and Square Enix, facilitated by a mutual acquaintance.
From Talks to Tokyo Stage
The idea gained momentum when Nakayama had the opportunity to present alongside Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy, at Tokyo Game Show 2025. This meeting provided a platform to further discuss the possibility of Tifa appearing in Street Fighter 6. The discussions culminated in the on-stage reveal at Summer Game Fest 2026, where Hamaguchi and Nakayama reunited to officially announce her inclusion.
Square Enix maintained a collaborative role throughout the development process, offering input on how Tifa would be represented in a fighting game context. "From their perspective, they had a lot of different ideas of what Tifa would feel like and look like in Street Fighter 6 or a fighting game, since she hasn't been in one before," Nakayama said. He noted that the feedback from the Square Enix team, including artist, writer, and director Tetsuya Nomura, was enthusiastic and swift, contributing significantly to the announcement trailer and overall production.
The news of Tifa's arrival generated considerable excitement across social media platforms. Nakayama observed widespread positive reactions, recalling instances at a Capcom Pro Tour event in the Dominican Republic where attendees watching the announcement became visibly hyped, demonstrating the character's broad appeal.
Tifa is slated to be the third character released in Street Fighter 6's Year 4 lineup. The season will begin with Yasmine on August 3, followed by Arjun in the fall. Tifa is expected in early 2027, with Bosch completing the lineup in spring 2027.
