The post-apocalyptic world of Fallout continues to expand, with Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard offering insight into the franchise's future and the prolonged wait for Fallout 5. Howard explained to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier that the studio views the franchise's health through a broader lens, encompassing various media and game types.
"I view TV as one chapter, and I view when is a franchise really, really healthy, and when can we execute whatever we're doing, whether it's a mobile game or a TV show or remasters, making sure that we execute those at the highest level," Howard stated. He indicated that Bethesda is carefully selecting the right "pocket-timing" for new Fallout releases and related content.
This broader strategy is already evident with several upcoming projects. Bethesda has confirmed that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development. Additionally, Obsidian Entertainment is collaborating on a new Fallout project, the details of which remain undisclosed. Fallout 76 will also receive a significant update later this year titled "Raven Rock," which will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3.
Despite these ongoing developments and the success of the recent Fallout television series on Prime Video, Fallout 5 remains the company's long-term objective. Howard confirmed that the game is currently in pre-production, signaling that while the wait may be long, the next main entry in the series is still planned. The studio's approach suggests a deliberate effort to maintain the franchise's presence and relevance through diverse offerings while ensuring the main installments meet a high standard upon release.
