Early in the development of Halo 2, there were discussions about recasting Master Chief and Cortana with major Hollywood actors like Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts, according to original voice actors Steve Downes and Jen Taylor. The idea was reportedly aimed at broadening the mainstream appeal of the franchise.

Downes, who voices Master Chief, recounted how he and Taylor initially had little idea of the game's burgeoning popularity until Halo: Combat Evolved became a massive success. Taylor speculated that Bungie's initial decision to keep the voice actors' identities private was intentional, focusing the audience's attention on the characters themselves rather than the people behind them.

However, Downes asserted that Bungie and Microsoft had concrete plans to replace him and Taylor with famous actors for the sequel. Taylor expressed some skepticism, humorously suggesting they would need corroboration from Halo's audio director and composer, Marty O'Donnell. Downes claimed O'Donnell did support this account and mentioned that Tom Cruise was considered for Master Chief.

O'Donnell confirmed that these conversations did occur for Halo 2, stating that they only began after the first game's significant success garnered attention in Hollywood. He recalled being at industry events where he was approached by a talent agency representative who suggested casting Tom Cruise as Master Chief and Julia Roberts as Cortana. O'Donnell, however, dismissed the idea, believing it would alienate the established fanbase who had already formed a connection with Downes and Taylor's performances. He felt that replacing the beloved original voices would have been detrimental to the game and the player's relationship with the characters.

Ultimately, the plan to recast Master Chief and Cortana never progressed beyond initial discussions. Downes and Taylor have continued to voice the characters for over two decades. They recently returned to re-record their lines for Halo: Campaign Evolved, an experience they both found rewarding and challenging. Taylor described feeling intimidated to revisit the role, while Downes praised the passionate team involved in the remake, highlighting the collaborative atmosphere that mirrored working with friends.

The performances in Halo: Campaign Evolved have evolved with the characters, with Downes and Taylor bringing a newfound confidence to their iconic roles, a testament to their long-standing tenure with the franchise. Halo: Campaign Evolved is set to release on July 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
