Tom Holland has revealed that he, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon were dissatisfied with an early cut of the film.
During an interview with Quotable, Holland discussed the creative process behind completing a major film. He explained that a movie can undergo significant changes from its initial script through production and post-production. The cast and crew saw multiple cuts of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and one particular version was universally disliked by the main trio.
"We've seen loads of different cuts of this movie, and one of the cuts, they took all of the notes from all of the random people who saw the film," Holland stated. "And then they changed the movie, and we watched it, and we hated it. It totally didn't work. It was what the people were asking for, but it wasn't quite what we wanted as the creatives." He added that the team learned valuable lessons from this experience, acknowledging that a film can be altered in numerous ways during the editing process.
This process likely involved feedback from test screenings, where rough cuts are shown to select audiences to gather their impressions. However, Holland suggested that relying too heavily on such feedback can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, potentially compromising the creative vision if not carefully considered.
Despite the challenges with early cuts, the Spider-Man team ultimately refined the film. Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is projected to achieve the largest opening weekend of 2026. A review from IGN noted that while the film treads familiar territory for the character, it still delivers an enjoyable adventure, awarding it a 7/10.
