Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Developer Confirms AI Tool Usage Amidst Fan Reaction

Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have confirmed the use of AI-assisted tools in the development of their upcoming game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The disclosure, which appeared on the game's Steam page following a new trailer reveal during a recent showcase, has prompted a mixed reaction from fans. The developers stated that AI-assisted tools were employed to "support some early exploration and temporary development content," and emphasized that "Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team."

In a statement provided to Eurogamer, Crystal Dynamics elaborated on their approach. "At Crystal Dynamics, we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted," a representative explained. "Our goal is to empower the creativity and flexibility of our developers to deliver the highest-quality experiences for players everywhere."

The use of AI in game development has become a recurring point of discussion, particularly during major gaming events like Summer Game Fest. While some players have expressed disappointment or concern regarding the integration of AI in game creation, others have shown tolerance, especially when assurances are given that human oversight and refinement are integral to the final product. Discussions on platforms like Reddit reveal a spectrum of opinions, with some users expressing a willingness to accept AI's role in early-stage development if it does not compromise the final artistic integrity of the game.

This instance highlights a trend where game announcements are increasingly accompanied by disclosures about AI usage. The cycle of excitement for new game reveals is often followed by scrutiny over development practices, leading to a sense of weary resignation for some players who feel the debate over AI in gaming has reached a point of persistent, if often limited, implementation. The question of whether AI is used in place of human artists or merely as a support tool remains a significant point of contention for the community.

Separately, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has also been delayed. It is now scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, a shift from its original 2024 target.

If it's just for early exploration and temporary development that was later replaced by actual human work then it's ok to me. AI should help humans not replace them.I welcome discussion about this, i'm not the most knowledgeable in the subject..aka drag me bitches i'm open to it lol.
