Creative Assembly has provided its most extensive look yet at Total War: Warhammer 40,000, showcasing a full battle in its latest Alpha Strike livestream. The gameplay demonstration focused on the Astra Militarum defending a river crossing against an Ork assault, offering significant insights into the game's ranged combat, unit mechanics, and strategic depth.
Ranged Combat and Unit Customization
The livestream highlighted several key advancements in how units function. Units now possess more detailed statistics due to being composed of multiple entities, each with specific weapon proficiencies effective against particular enemy types. Heroes will have customizable bodyguards, a departure from the individual hero units seen in previous Total War: Warhammer titles. Units can now strafe, allowing them to fire while moving slowly in a specific direction, although this maneuver impacts accuracy. The game simulates individual line of fire for each entity within a unit, enabling them to engage different targets simultaneously based on their unique sightlines. Projectiles are fully simulated, and units have unlimited ammunition. Furthermore, the game introduces mechanics like suppressing enemy units and sweeping fire for powerful units such as the Baneblades to maximize ranged damage.
A new Sentry Mode allows units to prioritize and target enemies before they enter optimal engagement range. The stream also confirmed the presence of grenades and unit abilities, with psykers being mentioned for the first time. A unit morale system is implemented, and units will visually display damage taken on their models. The developers also confirmed that blood effects will be included in the base game at no extra cost.
Strategic Depth and Positioning
Strategic positioning is poised to be a central element in Total War: Warhammer 40,000. The effective use of cover, line of sight, and environmental scenery will be critical for success in battles. Unit loadouts will also play a significant role in combat effectiveness and matchups, mirroring the strategic considerations of previous Total War: Warhammer games. The balance of power bar has been updated to visualize and represent reinforcements that are off the battlefield, allowing players to manage their deployment timing.
Reinforcements and Future Reveals
Players will have the option to deploy reserves strategically or hold them back for later reinforcement, utilizing assets such as drop pods or Thunderhawks for the Space Marines. The livestream indicated that the build shown is two months old, suggesting further refinements and additions are forthcoming. Creative Assembly plans to release more livestreams focusing on specific features as the closed beta approaches, with potential future showcases including Space Marines and Eldar units in combat.
