Creative Assembly plans to develop Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as a singular, evolving sandbox experience, rather than releasing a series of distinct sequels. This approach mirrors the successful strategy employed with the Immortal Empires mode in the Total War: Warhammer series, where all factions and lords converge in a massive persistent world.
According to battle product owner Dave Petry, the initial release of Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will serve as the "bedrock" for future content. The studio intends to deliver major updates and downloadable content that will enhance this core experience over time. "The true experience is the sandbox. That's what we want to build, and that's what we want to continue building on, and bringing that into one place," Petry stated.
This philosophy is designed to allow players to engage with the game in numerous ways, experiencing the entirety of its scope without being siloed into separate parts. The studio believes this unified approach fosters better collaboration and continuous improvement within the development team. "It's just such a huge galaxy to fill. So it made sense to treat this as sort of like that bedrock to start building a new future," Petry explained.
Creative Assembly has already begun hinting at post-launch additions. The game's initial release will feature four customizable factions: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Aeldari, and Orks. While this is a smaller roster compared to the fantasy Warhammer titles, the studio has confirmed plans to introduce additional Space Marine chapters, with Space Wolves already announced. Other potential additions include Genestealer cults and Chaos forces.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is slated for release in 2027.
