Tramell Tillman, known for his role as Bill Metzger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has opened up about the film's intricate plot points and his character's complex moral landscape. Tillman initially kept his involvement in the movie a secret, even from close friends and family, only revealing his participation when the news broke in August 2025.
Tillman's character, Bill Metzger, heads the Department of Damage Control and initially aids Spider-Man in confronting a powerful psychic villain who is eventually revealed to be Jean Grey. The film later discloses Metzger's prior actions: kidnapping Jean's sister, conducting fatal experiments on her, and subsequently attempting to replicate the process on Jean herself. Reflecting on these actions, Tillman stated that Metzger was motivated by a desire to protect the people he served, viewing Jean as a significant threat. "He did what he needed to do to protect people," Tillman explained.
Regarding Metzger's fate after the climactic confrontation, which saw Punisher accidentally shooting Spider-Man, Tillman suggested the character might be in hiding. He noted that Metzger witnessed the intensity of Jean Grey's powers firsthand, an experience he described as "near death." The actor also elaborated on the collaborative process with co-writer Justin Kuritzkes, who helped shape Metzger's character. The addition of a wife and family to Metzger's backstory, an idea shared by Tillman and Kuritzkes, served to heighten the character's stakes and motivations.
While Bill Metzger is a departure from his comic book counterpart—an anti-mutant activist killed by Magneto—Tillman was aware of the comic origins but focused on embodying the film's version of the character. He acknowledged the secrecy surrounding franchise productions as a skill he has honed over his career, comparing it to his roles in Severance and Mission: Impossible.
The much-discussed "V-Max" twist, revealed to be an acronym for "Vent Max" found in Jean's sister's prison cell, was seen by Tillman not as a letdown but as a clever narrative device. He interpreted it as a red herring that emphasized the tragic final moments of Jean's sister, a testament to the writers' and director's storytelling.
Tillman expressed a long-standing admiration for the X-Men, recalling childhood fantasies of playing Professor X. He finds the core theme of mutants possessing extreme power while being cast out by society compelling. While his involvement in future X-Men projects is uncertain, he acknowledged that joining such a beloved franchise would be a "childhood dream."
In other news, Tillman confirmed that filming for Severance season 3 is currently underway, and he expressed excitement for audiences to see the new material.
