Two brothers have pleaded guilty to a series of burglaries targeting Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) stores, resulting in the theft of over £71,000 worth of stock. Cheshire police apprehended Keith Johnson, 33, and his accomplice brother Shane Johnson, 37, following an investigation into multiple raids on specialist retailers.

Keith Johnson has already been sentenced to 29 months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary with intent to steal. Shane Johnson has admitted to the same charges and is awaiting sentencing. The brothers' criminal enterprise involved targeting shops that specialized in Pokémon memorabilia and TCG products.

One of the primary targets was Celestial Collectables in Warrington, where the pair smashed the shop's door and stole approximately £62,000 worth of Pokémon cards. The damage to the store itself exceeded £3,000. Following this incident, the brothers fled in a white Ford Transit van.

Further burglaries were committed at Pokémon TCG shops in Stockton Heath and The Graded Gallery in Rugby. At the latter, over £9,000 in damages were inflicted, alongside the theft of valuable cards. Police were able to trace the brothers' involvement by tracking the movements of the van and subsequently locating the stolen items at their property.

Detective Constable Hannah Smith commented on the case, stating, "The overwhelming evidence collected through our extensive enquiries put them at both crime scenes giving them no choice but to plead guilty. The brothers will now have to pay the price for their part in their criminal Pokémon enterprise." The value of the stolen goods across all incidents amounted to over £71,000.

The incidents highlight a persistent issue within the Pokémon TCG community, often exacerbated by manufactured scarcity. This has led to increased instances of theft and scalping, particularly following major set releases when demand outstrips supply. The Pokémon Company's printing strategies, such as producing less stock than needed, have been cited as a contributing factor to these market conditions.
