Sega and Two Point Studios have released the initial stages of their new downloadable content for Two Point Museum, titled Rides and Relics, offering players who own the base game a free preview of the expansion before its official launch on October 8. This DLC introduces familiar theme park attractions and mechanics, repurposing concepts from Bullfrog's classic Theme Park while seeking to innovate on the formula.
Integrating Rides and Nostalgia
The initial campaign stages of Rides and Relics are designed to ease players into the new mechanics, much like previous DLCs such as Arty Facts. However, even the early levels incorporate a significant amount of content, drawing heavily on nostalgia for classic theme park simulations. The core gameplay loop involves placing new rides, managing their queues, and setting admission fees. The length and placement of queues are crucial; insufficient queue space limits revenue, while excessively long lines can deter guests, reducing their overall engagement and spending within the museum-park.
Rides introduce a "thrilled" status to guests, which, alongside happiness, influences how long they stay. However, excessive thrills can lead to overstimulation and discomfort, manifesting as guest nausea and a ruined day. This mechanic encourages a balance between high-thrill attractions and more traditional museum exhibits. Players can mitigate these negative effects through various perks and ride upgrades, aiming to maintain guest satisfaction.
Improving Expedition Mechanics
While the base game's expedition system, which involves building scientific contraptions and acquiring random perks, was a weaker point, Two Point Studios has refined the process in Rides and Relics. Players can now earn improved blueprints by increasing survey levels at expedition sites and upgrade existing rides without additional cost. Although the selection of perks remains randomized, the implemented perks offer tangible improvements, contributing to a more polished gameplay experience. One notable improvement is the reduction of unwanted guest vomit, a feature fondly, or perhaps infamously, remembered from Theme Park.
Mascots also play an expanded role in managing visitor emotions and park ambiance. Unlike their more rudimentary appearances in Theme Park, Two Point Museum's mascots are now categorized by theme type. They contribute to general buzz, enhance exhibit appeal, and importantly, keep guests entertained while waiting in lines. The Cheese Goblin mascot, for example, helps extend the "thrilled" status of guests. Players can set mascot routes, similar to tour routes, and unlock new expedition locations for different mascot types, such as wildlife or art mascots. This encourages strategic placement and a mix of exhibit types, a design philosophy Two Point has increasingly emphasized in its expansions, offering bonuses for blending diverse exhibit genres.
Roller Coaster Construction
The expansion culminates in roller coaster building, a complex process that offers significant player control over track design, including heights and angles. Even the starter coaster allows for intricate customization. The initial roller coaster designs might challenge guest comfort, as sharp turns can create a precarious experience. Despite potential guest apprehension, the act of designing these rides remains a rewarding aspect of the DLC.
Rides and Relics is set to launch fully on October 8 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version to follow at a later date. The early access period has served as a strong incentive for players to continue engaging with Two Point Museum, highlighting the DLC's blend of nostalgic gameplay and refined management mechanics.
