Tokyo Game Show 2026 has been cut short by one day due to the impending arrival of Typhoon Dujuan. Originally planned as a five-day event for its 30th anniversary, the expo will now conclude on September 20.
Organizers announced the cancellation of the final day, September 21, citing the expected intensification of strong winds and heavy rain. "Prioritizing the safety of all attendees, exhibitors, and related parties, as well as ensuring safe return home, we have decided to cancel the event for the entire day," the organizers stated on X. Attendees who purchased tickets for September 21 will receive refunds.
The typhoon is projected to approach Japan's Kanto region, including Tokyo, by Monday night, with wind speeds potentially reaching 78 miles per hour. This decision impacts not only attendees but also game developers who secured booth space for the full duration of the event.
Despite the early closure, the show floor featured elaborate booths from various publishers. Square Enix presented a hands-on demo for Final Fantasy VII Revelation alongside a large statue of Sephiroth. PlayStation hosted screenings of the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended trailer, enhanced with special effects, but these events scheduled for September 21 have also been canceled due to the typhoon. Sony expressed regret for the cancellations and asked for public understanding.
While the show has not been marked by major new announcements or game reveals, the event's expansion to five days coincided with a Japanese holiday on September 21, an effort to mark the anniversary.
