Ubisoft experienced a significant misstep with the Steam release of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, accidentally launching the beloved 1999 turn-based strategy title without its core game files. The blunder occurred just hours before a separate announcement regarding a 3D remake of the game, which has since drawn mixed reactions from the long-time fan base.
Players who purchased Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete on Steam were met with a download of approximately 23.49 KB, a fraction of the expected 770 MB. This file proved to be a dummy executable, failing to launch and presenting users with error messages. One Steam reviewer noted that the release "did not even include the game files," a particularly embarrassing oversight given that the package was marketed as the complete edition, including expansions like Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death.
This new Steam release aimed to rectify the omission of the expansions present in Ubisoft's 2015 HD Edition, which only included the base game. Following the widespread reports of the incomplete download, Ubisoft eventually corrected the issue. Roughly 10 to 11 hours after the initial launch, a 770 MB update was made available, adding the missing game data and rendering the title playable. Despite the fix, some buyers indicated their intention to leave negative reviews.
The Steam release mishap was compounded by the unveiling of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake, scheduled for 2027. This upcoming title promises a full 3D overhaul using Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine, featuring a free camera, 4K visuals, dynamic lighting, and updated weather and seasonal effects. The remake is intended to include all nine factions, original campaigns, both expansions, and support for up to eight players, retaining Hot Seat multiplayer and compatibility with community-made content.
However, early gameplay footage has sparked skepticism among veteran fans. The primary concern centers on the art style, which many have criticized as overly generic and distant from the original's distinctive fantasy aesthetic. Discussions on platforms like Reddit have seen players liken the visuals to those found in mobile games, with some even speculating that parts of the trailer may have been AI-generated. Fans will have to wait until 2027 to see the final realization of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake and whether it can win over its dedicated player base.
