Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated that Sony's decision to cease the production of game discs in 2028 is unlikely to cause significant disruption to the gaming industry. This perspective places Guillemot in contrast to some consumers who express concern over an increased reliance on digital services and the loss of a secondary market for games.
During a recent quarterly investors call, Guillemot was asked about the potential for a "demand headwind" resulting from the elimination of the physical resale market for PlayStation games. He drew a parallel to the PC gaming market, noting that the rise of digital distribution platforms like Steam has historically aided in market growth. "What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market," Guillemot commented. He also suggested that a digital-only approach could lead to more accessible console pricing in the future due to reduced manufacturing costs associated with physical media.
While acknowledging that there are both advantages and disadvantages to this transition, Guillemot expressed confidence that the industry will adapt. The shift away from physical media on PC, largely driven by digital storefronts, has been a substantial force in how games are distributed and consumed on that platform. Despite the loss of avenues like trading in old games for new ones at retail, digital platforms offer frequent and deep discounts that many players find compensatory.
However, the comparison between PC and console digital ecosystems may not be entirely direct. Unlike the more open PC market, console platforms like PlayStation operate as more tightly controlled environments. Concerns have been raised that Sony may not loosen its grip on its digital storefront in an all-digital future, potentially leading to different outcomes than those seen on PC. The transition away from physical PC releases also occurred organically over time and was not mandated by a single entity, unlike Sony's proposed console strategy.
Despite these potential differences, Guillemot's overall outlook suggests that Sony's move towards disc-free gaming will ultimately be manageable for the industry. The company's commitment to this direction means players will likely need to adapt to a digital-first, and eventually digital-only, console future. Whether this transition proves to be a smooth one for gamers remains to be seen.
