Ubisoft has released a significant free update for its 2017 title, Ghost Recon Wildlands, bringing enhanced performance to current-generation consoles and introducing new gameplay content. The "Last Rites" update adds support for 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, alongside a new standalone mission and a suite of customization options for players.
This anniversary year for the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise, which marks its 25th year, sees Ubisoft revisiting its popular 2017 open-world shooter. The new mission, described by Ubisoft as taking place in a "darker, more oppressive" version of the game world, involves players hunting a cult leader named La Llorona in a treacherous region controlled by the Los Penitentes. The mission requires navigating dense forests and swamps with limited visibility.
The update also introduces a variety of ways for players to tailor their Wildlands experience. New difficulty, gameplay, UI, and environmental options are now available. Players can opt for perpetual nighttime and rainy conditions, adjust the number of AI squadmates when playing solo, or enable more challenging gameplay mechanics. These include penalties for reloading before a magazine is empty and the removal of excess ammunition from inventory. The Predator mission, originally a special event, has also been re-integrated into the game.
For those playing on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the "Last Rites" update delivers substantial graphical and performance improvements. These include enhanced rendering distance, improved lighting, a boost to 4K resolution, and a smooth 60FPS frame rate. Ubisoft's decision to provide these next-gen upgrades for free stands in contrast to practices seen from some other publishers who have charged for similar enhancements.
"Ghost Recon wouldn’t be where it is today without the passion, dedication, and feedback of its community over the past 25 years," said Olivier Leonardi, Wildlands' creative director. "With Last Rites, we wanted to create an experience that honors that legacy—something that feels authentic to longtime Ghosts, celebrates what makes this franchise special, and reflects our appreciation for the players who have been with us every step of the way."
