Three months after the successful launch of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, which sold two million copies in a single day and three million within its first week, Ubisoft has laid off 70 employees from its Singapore studio. The studio's statement indicated these positions were impacted to align with upcoming production needs, adding that Ubisoft Singapore remains an important part of the company's global production organization.
This move follows a similar situation where Ubisoft Barcelona, a support studio for Black Flag Resynced, experienced significant layoffs shortly after the game's release. The success of Black Flag Resynced was a much-needed win for Ubisoft, which has faced financial challenges and numerous workforce reductions in recent years.
In further restructuring, Ubisoft has also announced plans to close its Finland-based studio, Ubisoft Redlynx. This decision comes a year after the company proposed a "restructuring proposal" for the studio aimed at cost reduction and improved efficiency. Founded in 2000 and acquired by Ubisoft in 2011, Redlynx is primarily known for the Trials series of motorcycle racing games. Its most recent title, Trials Rising, was released in 2019. Since then, the studio provided support for Star Wars Outlaws and released the mobile game Gwen's Getaway. According to reports, the closure of Redlynx is due to the studio not currently having any active projects, making downsizing unfeasible.
Ubisoft has stated that it acknowledges the contributions of the affected employees and will handle the process with care and respect.
