Ubisoft has officially announced that a new installment in the Ghost Recon franchise is in development, marking the first new game in the series in seven years. The confirmation came during a special 25th-anniversary stream for the tactical shooter series.

Live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa shared the news, stating that the team has been working on the "next chapter of Ghost Recon" and is now ready to begin testing. She expressed excitement about delivering a "fun, fresh experience" that remains true to the series' core tenets of tactical action, large-scale operations, credible military storytelling, and the Ghost Unit itself. Fans were invited to sign up for the Ghost Recon Insider Program for early access to future closed tests.

Beyond the confirmation of its existence, Ubisoft provided minimal information about the upcoming title. The announcement lacked a trailer, screenshots, key art, or even an official name. However, reports and leaks have suggested that the project, codenamed Project OVR, has faced development challenges over the past few years. These leaks indicate a potential shift away from the open-world, looter-shooter elements of recent entries, with a return to a more grounded tactical shooter experience and a first-person perspective.

In addition to the new game announcement, Ubisoft also released a significant update for 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands. Titled "The Last Rites," this update introduces a new mission and offers players extensive control over gameplay elements, including enemy behavior, time of day, weather, and damage values. Current-gen consoles also receive 4K/60FPS support with this update. To commemorate the anniversary, Ghost Recon Wildlands is available for free play from August 6th to August 10th.
