Ubisoft is reportedly planning to relaunch Watch Dogs: Legion next year with a "Director's Cut" version of the game. The title, which launched in 2020 to a mixed reception, has not seen new entries in the franchise since, but there is a push to re-engage with Legion in early 2025, according to reports from Insider Gaming and IGN.
Watch Dogs: Legion's original design choice to allow players to recruit and play as any NPC in its virtual London setting proved divisive. While the game featured various archetypes for playable characters, these could be lost if they failed missions. Later downloadable content added series veterans Aiden Pearce from the original Watch Dogs and Wrench from Watch Dogs 2 as playable characters, alongside an expansion that featured a non-canonical crossover with Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
It is speculated that a Director's Cut could include this previously released content from the outset, potentially with a renewed focus on more recognizable characters rather than the "play as anyone" mechanic. The creative director for Watch Dogs: Legion, Clint Hocking, departed from Ubisoft earlier this year. He had been leading development on Assassin's Creed Hex, and described his experience leading large teams at Ubisoft as akin to "flaming barrels falling down from a construction site."
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot acknowledged in a recent statement that Watch Dogs had not been highlighted as a focus alongside the company's other major franchises following a restructure. However, he also stated that the brand remains "important for the future." Meanwhile, the fate of the long-discussed Watch Dogs movie, which concluded production two years ago and underwent reshoots last year, remains unclear as it still lacks a release date.
