Ubisoft has issued a statement clarifying the future of the Assassin's Creed series, revealing that no further remakes of past games are currently in active development. This announcement comes as a surprise, given previous comments from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in 2024, who indicated that multiple remakes were planned.
"One thing we want to be transparent about today is that we currently have no other Assassin’s Creed remake actively in development," Ubisoft stated on its official website. "Our teams are already focused on the next chapter of Assassin's Creed titles, including projects you haven't heard about yet, featuring new settings and stories."
Guillemot had previously spoken enthusiastically about revisiting older games and modernizing them, noting the richness of worlds within the earlier Assassin's Creed titles. The success of recent releases like "Black Flag Resynced," which reportedly sold over 3.5 million copies and exceeded expectations within its first two weeks, suggested remakes were a popular direction for the franchise.
Despite the current halt on remake production, Ubisoft has not entirely closed the door on the possibility of future revivals. "Like many of you, we love the idea of revisiting our classic titles, and we'll keep exploring opportunities to bring older titles back," the company's statement read. "That door remains open because, after all... Nothing is true, everything is permitted."
Ubisoft's focus appears to be on new entries in the series. Among the upcoming projects are "Codename Invictus," described as a player-versus-player multiplayer Assassin's Creed experience being developed by veterans of "For Honor" at Ubisoft Montreal. Details on its gameplay and appearance remain scarce.
Also in development is Assassin's Creed Hexe, a project from Ubisoft Montreal that has been characterized as a "darker, narrative-driven" experience. Initially rumored to be set in 16th-century Europe and targeting a 2026 release, Ubisoft has indicated that development is taking time to ensure its ambitious vision is realized. Reports from August suggest Hexe is still at least a year away.
The franchise leader for Assassin's Creed, Marc-Alexis Côté, departed Ubisoft late last year. This coincided with a company reorganization and the establishment of Vantage Studios, a joint venture between Ubisoft and Tencent intended to oversee development for major Ubisoft franchises including Assassin's Creed.
