Ubisoft has confirmed it will share details regarding the future of the Ghost Recon franchise on August 6, coinciding with the series' 25th anniversary. This announcement follows a period of increased speculation driven by numerous leaks and rumors about potential new entries in the long-running tactical shooter series.
Recent reports have suggested that a current-generation remaster of 2017's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is in development, featuring enhancements such as 4K resolution support, a 60 frames-per-second performance mode, and a new mission. This remaster is reportedly part of Ubisoft's initiative to provide an "upgrade treatment" for older titles while players await the next mainline installment. Further leaks indicated that the upcoming main Ghost Recon title, codenamed Project OVR, underwent significant feature cuts, including helicopters and proximity mines, after a failed alpha test earlier this spring.
In response to the mounting speculation, Ubisoft issued a statement via the official Ghost Recon X account, which has seen limited activity in recent years. This marks the first official acknowledgment of the rumors circulating about the franchise's direction.
The last new game released in the Tom Clancy-inspired series was Ghost Recon: Breakpoint in 2019. A battle royale title, Ghost Recon: Frontline, was announced in 2021 but was ultimately canceled less than a year later. With nearly seven years having passed since the release of a new main game, anticipation among fans for fresh content is high.
The upcoming announcements will also represent some of the first titles to emerge under the new leadership of Creative House 2. Christoph Hartmann, who previously founded 2K Games and served as VP at Amazon Game Studios, recently took over as general manager of Creative House 2 following a broader restructuring within Ubisoft that included layoffs earlier this year. The Ghost Recon project now falls under his purview.
