Ubisoft is taking steps to simplify the process of launching its games on Steam by reducing the reliance on the Ubisoft Connect launcher. Previously known as Uplay, Ubisoft Connect serves as a store and launcher for the company's titles and is typically initiated when a user starts a Ubisoft game on Steam or the Epic Games Store.

This change will begin with the upcoming release of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. According to information shared by Ubisoft in a Steam post to owners of the game, the publisher is experimenting with a new "Ubisoft Connect Services Steam Tool." This tool is designed to enable core Connect features, such as cross-progression and rewards, without requiring the full Ubisoft Connect PC launcher to be installed or executed.

This initial implementation is described by Ubisoft as a "first step toward a smoother and more streamlined launch experience on Steam." The company intends to continue refining Ubisoft Connect Services to better integrate with the Steam platform, aiming to deliver expected features and services while enhancing the user experience.

Ubisoft has indicated that this new tool will be progressively rolled out to more of its games available on Steam. It remains unclear if this updated system will necessitate linking Ubisoft accounts to Steam, a requirement currently in place with the existing Connect integration. The approach of integrating publisher-specific launchers is not unique in the PC gaming market, though other publishers often opt for less intrusive or less frequently mandated solutions compared to Ubisoft's previous model.
