Ubisoft is reportedly preparing to test a new tool that would allow players to access core game features on Steam without needing to install or launch the publisher's Connect launcher. The initiative, initially detailed in a Steam announcement post reportedly only visible to owners of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, aims to streamline the player experience.
According to a version of the announcement shared on Reddit, this tool is designed to keep Ubisoft game features such as cross-progression, cross-play, player safety functions, and challenges and rewards accessible. The goal is to provide these services without the mandatory presence of the Ubisoft Connect PC launcher.
This development represents a significant shift from Ubisoft's current model, which often requires players to run its proprietary launcher even when purchasing games through third-party storefronts like Steam. The move has been a point of contention for many PC players who prefer a more consolidated library and dislike the extra steps involved in launching games through multiple applications.
"This first version is an initial step toward a smoother and more streamlined launch experience on Steam," the alleged announcement states. "We will continue to iterate and improve Ubisoft Connect Services over time, with the goal of delivering the features and services players use and expect while making the Steam experience as seamless as possible."
Ubisoft plans to evolve and gradually roll out Ubisoft Connect Services to more of its games on Steam in the future. The company has not made a public statement about this tool, and a spokesperson for Ubisoft has been contacted for comment. The seemingly low-profile announcement of such a potentially player-friendly change has also raised some eyebrows, given the opportunity for a positive public relations outcome.
